In the dark foliage, golden oranges bloom ... (Goethe)

The orange tree (French: L'Oranger) first came to Arabia from south-eastern China and later to southern Europe.

Delightful white blossoms unfold an incomparable fragrance in spring and late summer, followed by shiny green small oranges, which then ripen into the famous golden apples, oranges. A wonderfully shaped crown of lanceolate leaves frame the wonder of golden apples. No wonder that Louis XIV of France, August the Strong of Saxony and many other princes dedicated veritable palaces to these plants, the famous orangeries that still form highlights in many Central European parks and palace grounds.

In the Middle Ages, the "apple from China" became very popular, especially at princely courts, because oranges were seen as the golden fruits of the Hesperides from Greek mythology, which were stolen by Heracles (Hercules) and gave him eternal youth and strength.

Oranges are rich in vitamin C, carotene and B vitamins. Oranges strengthen the immune system and are effective against springtime fatigue. Due to the economic importance of oranges, there is a great diversity of species and varieties.
